Differences between CBG, CBN, and CBD

If you’ve been scoping out CBD products over the last several months, chances are you’ve come across letter configurations like CBN, CBG, and THC. Don’t worry, these acronyms aren’t mistakes. In fact, they’ve become a major part of the hemp industry in the wake of its popularity.

So what are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are chemicals found in the cannabis plant, which is the source of hemp and THC. While scientists have identified hundreds of different chemicals in the plant, several cannabinoids have become the most popular for consumers.  Though many people may be familiar with CBD, or cannabidiol, there are several other lesser-known cannabinoids that offer wellness benefits. We at Tap Root Fields want to help you understand what it all means, so let’s break it down.

CBD is derived from hemp and doesn’t cause a high, also meaning it’s non-psychoactive. CBD is available in both marijuana and hemp form and is associated with many benefits including alleviating pain and easing anxiety. CBD is sold in tincture, edible, ointment, oil form, and you can even smoke it.  Our team at Tap Root Fields offers a CBD-infused sunscreen formulated for all skin types. As mentioned above, the reef-safe sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays and helps alleviate redness and inflammation for all-day hydration.

CBG is often known as the mother of cannabinoids mainly because it acts as a parent molecule from which all other compounds hail. That means that THC and CBD for example, all start as CBGA (an acidic form of CBG). Like CBD, CBG has been used to combat pain without having the intoxicating effect of cannabinoids like THC. It’s been claimed that CBG could be effective in decreasing inflammatory bowel disease and act as therapy for psoriasis and as an antidepressant.

CBN (Cannabinol) is slowly gaining popularity because of its benefits to sleep and pain management. So what exactly is this compound that is still being developed? CBN is created when THC is exposed to heat or oxygen. It has a mild psychoactive response that is slightly more than CBD but much less than THC. Our Nighttime Gummies are made using CBD and CBN with the intention to help you unwind.

Lastly, one of the most popular and well-known cannabinoids is THC. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is referred to as the psychoactive compound that causes the “high” of THC cannabis. Tap Root Fields’ CBD products are full-spectrum, meaning they contain legal and trace amounts of THC. THC is the most researched and debated cannabinoid with the debate centering on the fact that it is the main reason THC cannabis gets people ‘high.’

For anyone looking to take in the cannabinoid world, many would say that CBD is the most common place to start but the reality is that CBN and CBG are also gaining momentum. CBD sales as well as that of other cannabinoids are proving that consumers are interested in its natural benefits. And with the recent legalization of the cannabis industry in New York state, you can expect to see even more options locally sometime this year.
